Groundwork for the Driving Horse

  • Cmax Stables & Equestrian Center 657 Bass Lane Corvallis, MT, 59828 United States (map)

Groundwork for the Driving Horse and Transitioning to Ground Driving the Single Horse

This one-day clinic offers a mere glimpse at what I do in the first 4 – 6 weeks when starting the process of teaching a horse to drive.

  • If you ever wondered how I start my driving horses, this clinic is for you. But any horse benefits from these basic exercises!

  • This clinic is also for you if you have a driving horse already and would like to improve your overall relationship with your horse.

  • If you would like to evaluate a horse you were told is broke to drive, but you have never driven it and you are new to driving yourself.

  • If you would like to learn groundwork techniques for your driving (or saddle) horse and would like to understand ground driving,

You will be using your own horse for most of this clinic if possible. How far you will get will depend on your skill level, the horse’s disposition and level of basic training he’s had so far.

Morning: Where it all begins: teaching a horse to drive starts with groundwork on a halter and lead!  Understanding how groundwork prepares our future driving (or saddle) horse, from establishing respect, developing trust and confidence, to teaching our horses that every cue is connected to their feet.

Afternoon: Review of morning exercises, transitioning from groundwork to the crazy thing called “single line driving” and why I take this extra “weird” step. Progressing to ground driving with lines, working on your line and whip handling and word commands. The difference between long lining and ground driving.

Cost: $150.00 / student / own horse

            $190.00 / student / with horse provided

 Limited to 6 participants

Auditing: $25 / day / person

Folks from out of town can add on private instructions the following Sunday if interested.
