The Work Force

We originally acquired our first two Percheron cross colts while working for The Home Ranch in Colorado. Little did we know, that those two foals would some day be memorized on our logo for Out West Wagon Rides!

We have come to like the draft crosses, giving us a semi heavy horse capable of pulling, but still small enough to ride in the mountains.
Draft crosses, especially Thoroughbred / draft crosses, made up the largest portion of coach horses in the old times. Thoroughbred remount stallions were crossed on draft type mares and the result was a harness horse with the stamina and ground covering gait of the Thoroughbred.

We like the Percheron / Quarter Horse cross, which is what all of our horses are. They have all come out of Canada as weanlings and have been home raised and trained by Carl and myself.

Besides our wagon rides, all of our horses work on different farm equipment, including harrows, mowers, buck rakes, manure spreaders and sleds, and we even have done some horse logging.

 So let’s meet them!

Our oldest member of the team is “Elf”: Born in 1998, this bay gelding weighs in at around 1500 lbs and has the agility of a Quarter Horse. Elf is my lead horse in the 4 up and is the most sensitive member of the herd!

"Spike” is the big and gentle giant at 1660 pounds. Steady Eddy is his middle name and everyone loves his flapping lower lip! Born in 2000, he seldom has an “off” day and I love showing him off on the cart!

“Manny” is all business, a strong puller and is quiet the lover. Also still growing, he weighs in at over 1400 lbs. His seal brown color in the summer time is stunning!

“Sid” is the most conservative member of the herd, and slow and steady is his preference! However: get him on a cart and he will show off his high stepping Percheron trot!

There always has to be a goof ball in the crowd: “Diego” fits that description! Eager to go, people love his grey color and bright eyes! Still growing, this gelding weighs in at over 1400 lbs and 17 hands tall.
